Identifying an organization’s most significant road safety risks and hazards helps focus efforts and resources. A tool for determining probabilities, related costs and the organization’s level of control is included to help identify the priorities.
Why Identify Risks and Hazards?
Identifying and prioritizing your organization’s road safety (ORS) risks and hazards before you take action helps you focus your efforts on the most significant problem areas.
How to Identify Risks and Hazards
Start by looking at the results of your status review to compile a list of your organization’s most significant risks, hazards and problems. Then:
- Estimate the associated costs for each risk, hazard and problem
- Prioritize a list of the risks, hazards and problems
- Determine your organization’s level of control over each risk, hazard or problem
Consider the following definitions as you start to look at the risks and hazards in your organization:
Hazard: A thing or condition that may expose a person to a risk of injury or occupational disease
Risk: The chance of injury or occupational disease
Your organization may have additional road safety problems that don’t fit these definitions.
Problem: Any road safety issue that may interfere with the safety of your employees on the road
It’s likely that your organization will not be able to address all the road safety risks and hazards you identified in the status review. It is important to identify the most significant risks and hazards; these are the ones you can address to improve road safety outcomes.
The Risks and Hazards Worksheet will help you compile a list of the most significant occupational road safety risks and hazards for your organization. Read the Worksheet Instructions first and review the Sample Worksheet.
